Elements that are heavy and precious like gold, silver, and platinum are called r-process elements. And to produce such elements requires an enormous amount of energy. So far, no one has been able to explain how r-process elements can exist in the universe. However, the discovery of a dwarf galaxy called Retikulum II, which is approximately 98,000 light-years away from Earth, may be able to answer this mystery. Retikulum II is reported to have stars that contain a 'very large' amount of precious metal elements.
"Understanding how r-process elements can form is one of the most challenging problems in nuclear physics," said Professor Anna Frebel from The Department of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
"He added, the production of r-process elements requires a lot of energy, which is almost impossible to be done experimentally. The process of creating these elements cannot be done on Earth."

Newly discovered in 2015, the small galaxy Retikulum II orbits the Milky Way, and is one of the closest dwarf galaxies ever found.
By analyzing the starlight from several bright stars in the Retikulum II galaxy using the Magellan telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory, Chile, Ana and her team concluded that the dwarf galaxy contains a large amount of r-process elements.
The name r-process itself comes from the system used to create elements such as gold, uranium, and tin, called rapid neutron-capture. In 1957, physicists Hans Suess and Harold Urey proposed that valuable elements in the universe are formed through the r-process mechanism. They hypothesized that giant star explosions and rare neutron star mergers are the most likely scenarios for forming r-process elements.
