Dream - Stratospheric Platforms Limited (SPL) has received funding from PT Profesional Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Protelindo). With this funding, SPL hopes to provide high-bandwidth telecommunications networks using High Altitude Platforms (HAPS) powered by hydrogen emitted by SPL's unmanned aircraft.
"We are delighted to collaborate with Protelindo in the development of our 5G stratospheric technology and the production plans for hydrogen-powered HAPS aircraft as well as comprehensive telecommunications services," said SPL CEO Richard Deakin in a written statement on Wednesday, February 8, 2023.
This strategic partnership and investment marks the beginning of SPL and Protelindo's exploration of the leading and innovative HAPS technology in delivering telecommunications networks that can address Indonesia's topographic challenges.
Indonesia is the largest country in Southeast Asia, with over 17,000 islands and 1.9 million km2 of land. Indonesia's complex topography, including mountains and open seas, presents its own challenges for reliable telecommunications coverage.
SPL's HAPS technology is believed to provide direct coverage to users in an area of over 15,000 km2 with connectivity speeds of up to 200 Mbps. This HAPS technology also offers seamless integration with terrestrial networks and tower operators, 5G compatibility, and connectivity in all climates, conditions, and topographies.
SPL's last mile connectivity technology, which can be deployed anywhere and anytime, does not require large capital expenditures for innovative infrastructure provision and is environmentally friendly.
"We believe that SPL's HAPS aircraft can function as a tower in the sky, especially in areas with telecommunications coverage challenges. This HAPS technology aligns with the current telecommunications and connectivity needs, both in developed and developing countries," said Protelindo Group CEO Ferdinandus Aming Santoso.
For information, Protelindo is a telecommunications infrastructure company in Indonesia. As of September 2022, Protelindo owns and operates nearly 30,000 telecommunications towers with over 55,000 customers in Indonesia and has more than 100,000 km of fiber.
Meanwhile, Stratospheric Platforms Limited is a HAPS platform that provides connectivity in all locations, high bandwidth, low latency, and at a lower cost than traditional terrestrial solutions.
The company was founded in Cambridge, England in 2014, and is supported by European operator Deutsche Telekom. It is a provider of sustainable hydrogen-powered telecommunications solutions.
