Upcycling Fashion Products, Enhance Value with Exciting Designs

Dream - Based on data from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Indonesia ranks second as the world's largest contributor of plastic waste in 2019 with 3.21 million metric tons per year. This is due to the excessive use of plastic waste every day but minimal management.

"Especially now that people don't go out much because of the pandemic, they shop online. Deliveries sometimes use a lot of plastic, so plastic waste has increased, reaching 96 percent of the total waste," said Harimula Muharram, GM Product & Sustainability Project Leader at EIGER Adventure's Eiger x Lazada event on Wednesday, January 11, 2022.

This makes waste issues should be a priority to be immediately addressed by starting a sustainable lifestyle. Sustainable or environmentally friendly lifestyles are being practiced by many companies. Starting from small things like not providing straws, to buyers having to bring their own bags to reduce plastic usage.

Environmentally Friendly Fashion

Seeing this, many sectors have implemented environmentally friendly production. The fashion world is no exception.

Many brands are starting to pay great attention to the management of product packaging waste. One of the brands that implements this environmentally friendly concept is Eiger, which has launched upcycling products.

"Usually we dispose of grade B products, but now we upcycle them. Bags, sweaters, and bags are upcycled to extend the life of the products and make them unique," said Harimula.

Combine Cuts and Various Products

Like a jacket made from a blanket on the front. The wool blanket is cut and combined with various sources of used blankets. On the back, there are pockets made from leftover bag waste.

"Upcycling increases the value of an item, for example, grade B products are elevated. For example, bags are used for pattern cutting," said Siska Nirmala, Zero Waste Adventure & EIGER Brand Ambassador at the same event.

Environmentally Friendly Logistics

If the product is sustainable, the delivery should also be environmentally friendly. It is advisable not to use plastic and replace it with paper materials for easy recycling.

"Lazada uses more environmentally friendly cardboard and MSI certification, which is produced from sustainable forests, and the use of recycled corrugated paper or honeycomb paper reduces 70 percent of plastic," said Adiputra Wiharja, SVP Logistics, Lazada Indonesia.
