يٰٓاَيُّهَا النَّاسُ كُلُوْا مِمَّا فِى الْاَرْضِ حَلٰلًا طَيِّبًا ۖوَّلَا تَتَّبِعُوْا خُطُوٰتِ الشَّيْطٰنِۗ اِنَّهٗ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُّبِيْنٌ

Meaning: "O mankind! Eat from what is lawful and good on the earth, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy." (Quran Al-Baqarah: 168)

What is Suspicious Food?

Suspicious food itself is the uncertainty between the halal and haram of food. When a Muslim encounters suspicious food, it is better to avoid consuming it. This is in accordance with the following hadith:

"Whoever is in a doubtful matter, it is as if he is in a forbidden matter." (HR. Bukhari and Muslim)

In addition, regarding suspicious food, it is also explained in a hadith narrated by Tirmidhi as follows:

"Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt." (HR. At-Tirmidhi)

Suspicion itself is divided into several types as follows:

Prayer when in Doubt about Suspicious Food

When you, at some point, feel doubtful about suspicious food, for example, when you are in an area with a minority Muslim population, Sheikh Afdhaluddin al-Azhari suggests reciting this prayer after finishing your meal:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كَانَ هَذَا الطَّعَامُ حَلَالًا فَوَسِّعْ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ وَاجْزِهِ خَيْرًا وَإِنْ كَانَ حَرَامًا أَوْشُبْهَةً فَاغْفِرْلِيْ وَلَهُ وَأَرْضِ عَنِّيْ أَصْحَابَ التَّبِعَاتِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا أرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ

Meaning: "O Allah, if the food I eat is halal, then expand its sustenance (the one who provides the food) and reward it with goodness. And if this food is haram or suspicious, then forgive me and him, and keep away the consequences (of their own sins) from me in the Hereafter with Your mercy, O Allah, the Most Merciful among the merciful. ”

In addition, Sheikh Sya'rani also suggests reciting the following prayer:

اللَّهُمَّ احْمِنِيْ مِنَ الْأَكْلِ مِنْ هَذِهِ الطَّعَامِ الَّذِيْ دُعِيْتُ اِلَيْهِ فَاِنْ لَمْ تَحْمِنِيْ مِنْهُ فَلَا تَدَعْهُ يُقِيْمُ فِي بَطْنِيْ وَاِنْ جَعَلْتَهُ يُقِيْمُ فِي بَطْنِيْ فَاحْمِنِيْ مِنَ الْوُقُوْعِ فِي الْمَعَاصِي فَاقْبَلْ اِسْتِغْفَارِيْ وَارْضَ عَنِّيْ أَصْحَابَ التَّبِعَاتِ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَقْبَلْ اِسْتِغْفَارِيْ وَلَمْ تَرْضَهُمْ عَنِّيْ فَصَبِّرْنِيْ عَلَى الْعَذَاجِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ

Meaning: "O Allah, protect me from this food. If You do not protect me, then do not let this food remain in my stomach. If You make the food stay in my stomach, then protect me from the sins that arise from it. If You do not protect me from sin, then accept my repentance and keep away the consequences (of their own sins) from me. If You do not accept my repentance and keep them away from me, then grant me patience in facing the punishment, O Allah, the Most Merciful among the merciful. "
