Facts about Panji Gumilang Declared a Suspect of Blasphemy, Facing 10 Years in Prison

Dream - Bareskrim investigators finally declared Panji Gumilang as a suspect in a blasphemy case after the leader of Al Zaytun Islamic Boarding School underwent questioning at the National Police Headquarters on Tuesday, August 1, 2023.

Director of General Crimes (Dirtipidum) at Bareskrim Polri, Brigadier General Djuhandhani Rahardjo Puro, said the process of declaring a suspect is based on the results of the case review conducted by investigators.

"The results of the case review process all agreed to elevate Mr. PG as a suspect," said Djuhandhani.

Djuhandani explained that the police still have 1 x 24 hours to determine the detention status of Panji.

Panji Gumilang requested the examination to stop after he was declared a suspect. For the time being, Panji Gumilang will be placed in the detention center of Bareskrim Polri, South Jakarta. The examination will be resumed later in the afternoon.

Djuhandani said Panji Gumilang is charged with multiple articles with a penalty of 10 years in prison.

"The charged articles are Article 14 paragraph 1 of Law Number 1 Year 1946 and/or Article 45a paragraph 2 in conjunction with Article 28 paragraph 2 of the ITE Law and/or Article 156a of the Criminal Code. The penalty is 10 years," he said.

Dream - Al Zaytun Islamic Boarding School once again drew attention after inviting a Jewish activist to the celebration of the Islamic New Year 1 Muharram 1445 Hijriah. The event took place in one of the halls in the Islamic boarding school led by Panji Gumilang.

In a video uploaded by the Instagram account @fakta.indo, Panji Gumilang invited a Jewish activist named Monique Rijkers.

“Panji Gumilang caused a stir again by inviting an activist of Jewish descent named Monique Rijkers to the celebration of 1 Muharam or Suro 1445 H,” stated the caption of the upload.

Initially, the host of Al Zaytun Islamic Boarding School called Monique Rijkers to come up on stage to give a speech.

“Next, a speech from a senior journalist, a diversity activist especially for Jews, Mrs. Monique Rijkers,” said the host at Al Zaytun Islamic Boarding School.

Monique Rijkers then went up on stage and started her speech by saying the greeting ‘Shalom’ to Al Zaytun Islamic Boarding School.

She then extended her peaceful greetings to Panji Gumilang and the entire Al Zaytun family.

“Shalom to Al Zaytun, peace from me, a fact about Israel. Peace be upon Sheikh Panji Gumilang and the entire Al Zaytun family,” said Monique.

In the video, Monique is seen wearing a head covering and a white shirt with the Star of David symbol, which is the flag of Israel.

"Thank you for inviting me here, allowing me to come wearing the Star of David shirt," Monique said, greeted by applause from the audience.

Until now, there has been no official explanation from the leader of Al Zaytun Islamic Boarding School, Panji Gumilang, regarding the reason for inviting a Jewish activist to the celebration of the Islamic New Year 1 Muharram 1445 Hijriah.
