Dream - A student at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada, chooses to commute home by plane instead of having to rent a place near campus.
Quoted from Indian Express, Tim Chen from Calgary said that paying monthly rent in Vancouver is more expensive than buying plane tickets because in one week, he only attends two classes.
"I have two days that require me to go to campus for lectures (Tuesday and Thursday), I fly to Vancouver in the morning and return to Calgary in the evening. I fly with Air Canada for all these flights, and for the month of January, I made seven round trips like this."

To travel round trip by plane, Chen spent around US$150 or approximately Rp2.3 million. For one month, it means Chen has to spend US$1200 or equivalent to Rp18.7 million.
Meanwhile, the cost of renting a one-bedroom apartment in Vancouver can reach twice as much, which is US$2100 or Rp32.7 million per month.
"I found there are cost savings on rent because I don't have to pay rent in Calgary (staying with my parents) except for utilities, and it is much cheaper than renting a 1-bedroom apartment for USD2100 in Vancouver,"

Vice President of Student Residence and Community Service at UBC, Andrew Parr, expressed concern for students facing a housing crisis. This issue has prompted the campus to build dormitories below market prices, as quoted from NDTV.
"We realize that finding affordable rental accommodations in Vancouver and Kelowna is a challenge for some of our students, as it is for other students renting in the community. In Vancouver, this is particularly difficult."
