After living in Indonesia, Ulya felt comfortable. She even decided to convert to Islam in Indonesia after living in a dormitory and most of her friends being Muslims. Ulya admitted her interest in Islam when she tried wearing a hijab. Coincidentally, at that time, Ulya was invited by her friends to go out. She said the weather was very hot, but Ulya tried wearing a modified hijab from a bandana.

Feeling comfortable wearing a hijab, Ulya sought to find out and asked her friend about Islam. After studying Islam, Ulya became more interested and started learning recitation and prayer. "Then I asked what are the principles of Islam, what are the differences (with other religions) and such. Then I was explained and I felt like it was a good fit and I felt like, yes, this is true. I knew about Islam but I didn't know much about its principles and concepts," said Ulya.
