Hamas group is reported to have launched a sophisticated and coordinated operation. In the early hours, Hamas unleashed thousands of rockets at various targets, including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Meanwhile, in southern Israel, Hamas fighters infiltrated the area by sea, air, and land.

The attack carried out by Hamas surprised residents who were shocked by the slow response of the Israeli forces in providing assistance. On Hamas channels, footage was shown of Israeli soldiers being captured and killed in both posts and inside tanks. The sudden attack by Hamas has caused concern among the population in the Gaza Strip. A young man in Gaza City who supports Hamas's retaliatory action against Israel's actions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque admitted to being worried about the attack. "We are worried, my family has already lost our store when the Shorouk Tower was hit by Israel in the 2021 war," he said.

Gaza Strip - a small coastal territory home to approximately 2.3 million Palestinians - was taken over by Hamas in 2007, a year after they won parliamentary elections. Israel and Egypt then tightened the blockade on the region. The country is still poor with an unemployment rate of around 50%. After a serious conflict between Israel and Hamas in 2021, indirect talks mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the UN helped secure thousands of permits for Gaza residents to work in Israel and ease other restrictions in exchange for relatively calm conditions.

The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, on Saturday (7/10/2023) evening ordered the cessation of electricity, fuel, and goods supplies to the city of Gaza. Netanyahu also stated that the first phase of the retaliatory operation has ended and Israel has fought against the majority of Hamas members. He vowed to continue the attacks unconditionally and without pause. Israeli media reported that as many as 250 people have been killed and 1,500 others injured. This attack is reported as the deadliest in Israel in recent decades. At least 232 people in Gaza have been killed and at least 1,700 others injured in the Israeli attack, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
