Dream - Still remember Choirun Nasichin alias Kaji Nunut? A man from Dusun Ngrumek, Desa Nglele, Kecamatan Sumobito, Jombang, East Java, who caused a stir in Indonesia by sneaking onto a plane to the Holy Land in 1992. Long unheard of, it turns out Choirun has performed the hajj pilgrimage twice, in 1994 and 2009, and once performed the umrah pilgrimage in 2005. Born on August 4, 1962, he even became a muthawif or guide for hajj and umrah pilgrimages.
"Sometimes I also help people sell land," said Choirun, quoted from Berita Jatim, Thursday, May 16, 2024. Choirun revealed that since he hitched a ride on Garuda's Boeing 737 aircraft carrying hundreds of Hajj pilgrims, the media has been buzzing with news.
"After that incident, I became famous. Because all the media reported it. Since then, I have been called Kaji Nunut or Haji Nunut alias Haji Nebeng," said Choirun."
Because of the news, it sparked a lot of sympathy and empathy from the wider community. He is even known by a number of scholars, one of them being Habib Syech Abdul Qodir Assegaf. In his Facebook post, Haji Choirun Nasichin Z was seen taking a photo with the scholar from Solo while attending a sholawat event at the regent's pendopo in Jombang. Both of them appeared close and embraced each other in the photo.
Choirun is still active in religious activities. Through social media posts, he shares the activities of the sholawat assembly in his house. The honorary title of "haji nunut" bestowed upon him introduced Choirun to Thosim, a transportation businessman from Gresik who provided him with a free hajj pilgrimage.
Because from 1992 to 1993 Choirun was still undergoing legal processes, Choirun could only depart for the pilgrimage in April 1994. "At that time, the cost of the pilgrimage was Rp8 million. Alhamdulillah, I didn't spend a single penny. Everything was funded by Mr. Haji Thosim. Maybe this is the blessing from the nunut action that I did," said Choirun.
Choirun was indeed born into a humble family, even classified as barely making ends meet. Let alone the cost of going on a pilgrimage, his family relies on a small shop that sells cigarettes, crackers, and ice just to sustain their daily meals.
While the father works as a farmer. Despite being economically limited, the Choirun family is rich in faith. They are all experts in worship. Despite being economically limited, the second child out of six siblings still dares to go on a pilgrimage in an unconventional way.
He did it because he wanted to perfect his worship by performing the fifth pillar of Islam. Moreover, at that time, the child of Zainudin and Siti Qofsah was already familiarly called Kaji (haji). "I have never performed the hajj pilgrimage, but the residents already call me Wak Kaji," he said.
The emergence of the nickname, according to Choirun, is not without reason. This is inseparable from the white peci that always sits on his head. He always wears the hajj peci throughout the day. Even when going to the rice fields and accompanying his mother to the market, he never forgets to wear the peci. He only takes off the white peci when Choirun sleeps. The nickname 'Wak Kaji' is what sparked Choirun's desire to go to the Holy Land.
"Since then, or around the 1990s, I was determined to be able to go on a pilgrimage. Because people from my village had already started calling me with the title of Wak Kaji. However, once again, the high cost became a hindrance. Just for daily meals, my mother sells crackers, and my father works as a farm laborer. How could it be possible to go on a pilgrimage," he said."
Besides saying greetings, one thing that should not be forgotten is to pray before entering the house.
