A woman named Chioma Okoli from Nigeria has been sentenced to seven years in prison for allegedly violating cybercrime laws in her country. Chioma committed this act by writing excessively negative reviews about a can of pureed tomatoes on social media. This action could potentially harm the food company. Therefore, Chioma's actions are considered a crime under the law in her country.
"In September last year, Chioma Okoli, who is 39 years old, used her Facebook account to express her opinion about a can of tomato puree that she had just bought. She criticized that the tomato puree contained too much sugar. After that, Chioma invited her friends and followers to share their opinions as well."
Chioma's post went viral on the social networking platform Meta, with over 3,000 comments, including one from someone claiming to be the sister of the founder of Erisco Foods Limited, the company that produces the canned pure tomato. They asked Chioma to stop criticizing the product and try other alternatives.

On September 24, while at a church in Lagos, Chioma was confronted by police dressed as thugs and arrested on charges of "inciting Erisco Foods Limited," based on Article 24 (1) (B) of the Nigerian Law on Prohibition of Cybercrime. She was then held in a leaky cell for one day before being taken to the Nigerian capital, Abuja.
Erisco Foods Limited, the company that produces the pure tomato mentioned by Chioma Okoli in her Facebook post, has also taken legal action against her. They have filed a lawsuit for 5 billion naira (equivalent to Rp. 71,227,946,450) against her. The company claims that the negative impact of the publicity has caused serious losses, including the loss of several suppliers and access to some credit lines. Despite pressure from the public, Erisco's founder, Eric Umuofia, stated that he would rather die than let the reputation he has built over 40 years be destroyed.
As a result of expressing her opinion through negative reviews on social media, Chioma is now sentenced to seven years in prison or a fine of 7 million naira. She is scheduled to attend a court hearing on April 18th to hear her charges.
