The researchers then identified a specific rumbling sound for 119 individuals by distinguishing female elephants and their offspring that were separated from their group during each vocalization or approached during a call. Using a computer model, the researchers correctly identified the recipients of 20.3% of the 625 recorded calls.

Even the calls from different individuals to the same recipient show similarity, although the pattern may be less defined when compared to calls between different individuals. Researchers note that this may occur because the sounds produced by elephants contain multiple messages at once, making it difficult for computer models to select the "name" used in each call.
