"10,000 years ago, humans had already begun to enjoy chewing gum, this fact was revealed through the discovery of remnants of chewing gum of the same age in the region of Sweden."
According to IFL Science, at the location of Huseby Klev, western Sweden, three pieces of chewing gum made from tree resin were found. Although these remnants were initially discovered in the 1990s, it has recently been confirmed that the resin had actually been chewed by humans.
The translation of "Jejak Permen Karet Pada Zaman Batu." to English is "The Footprint of Gum in the Stone Age."
"During the Stone Age, rubber from the damar tree was used as an adhesive material. Through sediment age analysis at the site of the rubber lump discovery, researchers estimate that the gum originated from an age range of approximately 9,540 to 9,890 years ago."
To ensure that the rubber clump was truly chewed by humans, researchers compared the microbial DNA sequences within the rubber to the saliva microbiome from both modern and ancient times. The analysis results revealed an increase in the number of bacteria associated with gum disease, such as Treponema denticola, Streptococcus anginosus, and Slackia exigua.
In addition, other bacteria such as Streptococcus sobrinus and Parascardovia denticolens, known as markers of tooth decay, were also found abundant in the clumps of the old chewing gum.
In the analysis of the rubber candy, besides other plants, researchers detected the presence of mistletoe. They speculate that mistletoe could be used as medicine or even utilized to create poison that can be used on arrowheads.
According to Professor Anders Gotherstrom, another researcher in this study, the DNA information found in the chewing gum provides insights into the lives of a small group of hunter-gatherers along the west coast of Scandinavia.
"We know that these teenagers consumed reindeer meat, trout, and hazelnut 9,700 years ago on the west coast of Scandinavia, while at least one of them had severe dental problems," he said.
