"Prayers for Passing Graves and Their Etiquettes during Pilgrimage that are Important to be Observed by Muslims"
Reading prayers passing through graves is good for the deceased male and female.
Reading prayers passing through graves is good for the deceased male and female.
Dream - Passing through a cemetery area is considered spooky for some people. Many forget that they will eventually become one of the residents of that grave. The cemetery area should be seen as a place to remind us of the certain death that will happen. Only Allah SWT knows how long a person's life in this world will be. The task of humans in this world is only to prepare provisions if death comes at any time. Muslims usually visit graves to pay respects to family members, relatives, and friends who have passed away.
In addition to maintaining manners while in the cemetery area, we are also encouraged to read prayers passing by the graves for the deceased. After passing away, these grave experts only need prayers from the living.
The following is a prayer reading passing through the grave along with its etiquette when visiting as summarized by Dream through various sources.
"When passing through a cemetery, besides saying greetings, Dream friends can also read the following prayer while passing through the graves:"
Assalamu 'alaikum yaa ahlal qubuuri, yaghfirullaahu lanaa wa lakum, antum salafuna wa nahnu bil atsar. Translation: "Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of the graves. May Allah forgive us and you. You precede us and we will follow." This prayer comes from a hadith narrated by Imam Tirmidhi, which states:
"The Prophet saw once passed by a graveyard in Madinah, then he turned his face (towards the grave) and prayed: Assalamu 'alaikum yaa ahlal qubuuri, yaghfirullaahu lanaa wa lakum, antum salafuna wa nahnu bil atsar (Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of the graves. May Allah forgive us and all of you. You precede us and we will follow)."
"Islam teaches that adab (etiquette) is the most important thing in every action. This includes when visiting graves. Here are some etiquettes of visiting graves that should be observed:"
The first etiquette of visiting graves is to greet the deceased. This is what the Prophet Muhammad taught his people, which is to greet and also recite prayers as previously mentioned.
"After that, when visiting, it is also recommended to recite short verses. As explained in a narration by al-Marwazi from Ahmad bin Hanbal: 'When you enter the cemetery, recite al-Fatihah, Surah Ikhlash, and al-Muawwidzatain (al-Falaq and an-Naas). Make the reward for the graves of the deceased, for indeed the reward reaches them.'"
The next etiquette when visiting graves is that one should not sit or step on the top part of the grave. As explained in the following hadith: "Do not pray (supplicate) to the grave and do not sit on it." (HR. Muslim)
One of the etiquettes in visiting graves is not wearing footwear. The purpose is to respect the inhabitants of the grave. However, if Dream's friend sees that the grave area is hot, wet, and so on, it is allowed to wear sandals. So, it is adjusted to the condition.
In a hadith it is explained as follows: "O person who wears sandals, you are cursed, take off your sandals! Then the person looked and when he knew (that the one who reprimanded him was) the Prophet Muhammad SAW, he took off and threw his sandals," (HR. Abu Daud).
According to the tradition of the Prophet, it is recommended to send prayers or pray for the deceased. When praying, it is recommended to face the qibla. In a series of prayers, it is also recommended to recite tasbih, takbir, tahmid, and dhikr. In a hadith, it is explained as follows: From Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, "The Prophet once went to Baqi' and he prayed for them. So Aisha asked him about it. He replied, 'I have been commanded to pray for them.'"
The last etiquette when visiting graves is to pour water on top of the grave. This is a practice of the Prophet according to the following hadith: "Indeed, the Prophet Muhammad poured water on top of the grave of his son Ibrahim and placed a stone on it." (Narrated by Abu Daud)
When receiving bad premonitions, it is better to read more prayers and establish prayer.
