At that time, Soekarno was on his way to Yogyakarta to inaugurate Masjid Syuhada. It didn't take long, Soekarno then fell in love with Hartini. A year later, they met again during the inauguration of the open theater Ramayana at Candi Prambanan.

Soekarno also began sending letters to Hartini through his friend as an intermediary, using the pseudonym Srihana. Two days after the birth of Guruh Soekarno Putra on January 15, 1953, Soekarno asked Fatmawati for permission to marry Hartini.

The decision of Soekarno to marry Hartini later sparked protests from various women's organizations, one of which was Perwari that strongly opposed polygamy. Nevertheless, Soekarno still married Hartini at Cipanas Palace on July 7, 1953. Hartini was considered one of the women who could stay and meet Soeharto for the longest time. However, their closeness does not mean that Soekarno stopped having romantic relationships.

Soekarno is still married to Ratna Sari Dewi (1961), Haryati (May 1963), and Yurike Sanger (August 1964). However, it is recorded that Hartini became the person who spent the longest time filling half of Soekarno's life. In fact, she is referred to as a loyal figure, accepting and devoted to her husband.
