"Dream - A group of scientists discovered an ice ocean in Antarctica that is 10 times the size of England suddenly disappeared. Researchers refer to this event as the first in the last 2,000 years. Researchers from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) used the CMIP6 climate dataset to examine the massive loss of sea ice occurring in Antarctica. With this dataset, the researchers analyzed data from 18 different climate models to understand the probability of such a sharp decline in sea ice.

"This is the first time that a large-scale climate model has been used to determine the likelihood of low sea ice in 2023," said the lead researcher of this study, Rachel Diamond, as quoted from indi100.com. Diamond stated that climate models play a crucial role in the analysis because until now, satellites have only been measuring sea ice for 45 years, making it very difficult to assess the extent of sea ice."

"According to these models, the minimum extent of sea ice breaking this record will only occur once every 2,000 years without climate change. This shows us that this event is extremely rare—something less than one in 100 is considered highly unlikely to occur," added Diamond. Another author in this study, Caroline Holmes, stated that the lowest point in 2023 is more likely to occur due to climate change."

That can be seen from the strong climate change in the models making the world four times more likely to see such a large decline in ice. Scientists also use these models to examine how long it takes for sea ice to recover. They found that even after 20 years, not all sea ice around Antarctica will return.
