A 85-year-old Indian woman is going to break her vow of silence that she has maintained for 30 years. The woman named Saraswati Devi has been practicing the silent act and only speaks for one hour each day.
Now, after three decades have passed, Devi, who is better known as Mauni Mata, will end her vow of silence. Devi started her vow of silence, known as 'maun vrat', since 1992. She swore to remain silent and only speak for one hour each day after her husband passed away in 1986.
It all started when Devi went on a pilgrimage to Hindu sacred places in the Ayodhya region. There, Devi met a Hindu priest named Mahant Nritya Gopal Das.
The priest instructed Devi to circumnavigate Mount Kamtanath as a sign of her devotion to the religion. On December 6, 1992, coinciding with the destruction of the Babri Mosque in Ayodhya, Devi met with other Hindu priests.
Devi was so inspired by her meeting with the priest and the event of the destruction of the Babri Mosque. Until finally, she decided not to speak until a temple is built on the site of the Babri Mosque. Devi will end her vow of silence at the end of January, coinciding with the inauguration of the Ram Mandir Temple in Ayodhya.
"After the demolition of the Babri Mosque, my mother-in-law visited Ayodhya and observed 'maun vrat' until the construction of the Ram Mandir," said one of Devi's daughters-in-law."
According to him, his mother-in-law performed her silent act for 23 hours and only took a break to speak for one hour during the day.
"To communicate silently, Devi uses paper and pen. Occasionally, Devi also uses sign language."
"Most of the time, we understand her sign language. But she usually writes complex sentences on a piece of paper," explained her daughter-in-law.
Although only speaking for one hour each day, it is enough to make Devi's family feel relieved. The problem is, they can still communicate with Devi well, just like with a normal person. But since the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, officially announced the construction of the Ram Mandir, Devi has completely stopped speaking.
Devi has visited the most prominent Hindu temples in India for the past 32 years while observing her vow of silence.
On January 22nd, when Ram Mandir is inaugurated, Devi will break her 'maun vrat'. She will utter her first words in over 3 years, which are 'Ram Naam' meaning Lord Rama.
