Dream - Hussam Al-Attar (15) is dubbed as the 'Newton of Gaza' after successfully creating electricity from wind using simple equipment during displacement. With the help of an old wind turbine, Hussam is able to generate electricity and successfully illuminate the displaced people in Rafah, southern Gaza Strip that is blocked by Israel.
Reported by Middle East Monitor, Hussam was a student at Jabel Mukaber School in northern Gaza before Israel launched a devastating attack in the besieged area on October 7. He and his family lost their homes after having to leave their house in the Beit Lahia area for Al-Nasr.
Hussam and his family evacuated to Khan Yunis by walking, until they arrived in Rafah near the border with Egypt, which became a place of refuge.
"I saw my twin nephews and only saw fear in their eyes. They feel lonely in the darkness inside the tent. So I thought... Bring joy to them, and light up this place," said Hussam to Quds Press. He spent 20 days in the Rafah refugee camp without electricity. From there, an idea came to Hussam on how to generate electricity to illuminate the tents of Gaza refugees in Rafah."
"The idea of utilizing cold weather has inspired me to turn it into a source of warmth and heat," said Hussam Al-Attar. Hussam began his experiment by modifying an old fan that he brought to eliminate darkness in the camp. He assembled the old fan to convert kinetic energy from the wind into electrical energy."
The first attempt failed and it took three tries for the idea to succeed. Hussam used the turbine to generate electricity by installing it on one of the iron poles inside the camp. "I managed to light up the place occasionally, as it would light up when there was wind, and when the wind slowed down, darkness enveloped the camp," he said.
Hussam noted that before the outbreak of war, he was able to make underwater lights and safety zippers for wireless door closures. "The refugees in the camp nicknamed me the 'Newton of Gaza', as a tribute to my efforts in illuminating the place," he said.
The mother admitted to being proud of Hussam. She said her child has always been interested in science and has often conducted experiments since childhood. "He has been talented from a young age. He enjoys playing with anything he can get his hands on, and he creates things that are useful. Families also ask for his help in fixing their electrical equipment," she said.
He hopes that Hussam can become a great inventor who will bring benefits to the community and his struggle. "This is the generation of Palestine that will not be defeated. This is the generation that seeks life in the midst of darkness and death," he said.
"I love life, and I love its details. I want to be an inventor and Palestine will never die within me," said Hussam.
