Accompanied by his wife, Siti Atikoh, Ganjar took a nostalgic trip down memory lane and reminisced about the boarding house and office when he first migrated to Jakarta after graduating from Gadjah Mada University (UGM). Like other migrants, Ganjar started his dreams and career through difficult processes. He lived in a cramped boarding house in the heart of the capital city.

Ganjar and Atikoh were warmly welcomed by the landlord and the surrounding residents. For the local residents, Ganjar has become like their own family. Wearing a dark-colored sports shirt, Ganjar walked through the alley in the Petojo Sabangan area, Gambir District, Central Jakarta, on Saturday, January 6, 2024. The local residents welcomed Ganjar like a child returning from afar. It's no wonder, as all the residents still recognize him and are familiar with him.

"Similarly, Ganjar still remembers each and every name of the residents who live around his boarding house. For example, there is Ibu Rosali, the owner of the boarding house who is usually called Bu Ros, and Engkar. That woman used to help Ganjar with laundry. 'This is Ibu Ros, the owner of the boarding house, and this is Engkar, who helps me with laundry,' said Ganjar."

The former Governor of Central Java for two terms also sees many changes in the boarding houses. In the past, the boarding houses were still made of plywood walls like barracks, but now they are made of bricks. "Back then, the divider was plywood. The size was 2x5 square meters, so if you stretch your legs, it would be gone. It cost Rp 50,000 per month," he said.

He recounted, occupying the boarding house for approximately 4 years since 1997. During that time, Ganjar walked about 500 meters each way to and from work at a consulting company. "If I walk to work, it's quite close. That office was newly built and I worked there," he said. The white-haired politician also remembered the events of 1998 when there was a major riot in Jakarta. Many people were running, even entering the middle of the village.

"This alley used to be busy during the 1998 incident," he explained. After reminiscing with the residents around his boarding house, Ganjar then walked to his former office. However, it has now been transformed into a modern store."

"This used to be the office. There were nails to install the air conditioner, and I personally installed them," he said. The presidential candidate, who is paired with Mahfud MD, shared tips for young people who want to start a career in Jakarta or other areas."

"Back then, my salary was Rp350 thousand, it was really tough. So, I had to manage my food needs, don't look for expensive ones. The message is to struggle, learn management, and don't complain," he said. Meanwhile, Mrs. Ros said that Ganjar is a good and friendly child with the residents around the boarding house. Therefore, Ganjar is already considered as part of the family. "He is kind, friendly, and often gathers with the residents here. Yes, it feels like home, he is like our own family," she said.

"Of the many years, according to him, Ganjar's polite and courteous attitude has not changed. "He is polite and kind. He has always been a good person," he said."
