According to the BPS report, the number of unmarried youth continues to increase every year. When viewed by gender, male youth tend to delay marriage more than female youth.
In 2023, the number of men who postpone marriage is 78.2 percent, while the number of women is 58.15 percent. The age groups that delay marriage the most are young men aged 16-18, 19-24, and then 25-30. This trend of postponing marriage mostly occurs in urban areas.
BPS noted that the highest number of young people delaying marriage is in DKI Jakarta, Aceh, and North Sumatra (Sumut). In Jakarta, for example, unmarried youths reach 80 percent. While in Aceh it is 75.94 percent, and in North Sumatra it is 75.43 percent. According to BPS, the increase in the percentage of unmarried youths is partly due to the minimum age policy for marriage in Law Number 16 of 2019 concerning Marriage.
"Minimum Age Limit for Marriage"
The law amends the provisions in Marriage Law Number 1 of 1974 regarding the minimum age limit for women to marry. From previously being 16 years old, it becomes 19 years old, which is the same as the minimum age limit for men to marry.
In addition, BPS also noted that there are several other factors, such as wanting to pursue success in education and career, self-development, and reduced pressure from the social environment.
Lowest unmarried
BPS also recorded other provinces with the lowest unmarried youth status, namely West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), reaching 60.21 percent. Meanwhile, East Java 62.31 percent and Central Kalimantan 62.91 percent.
