"The Sahara Desert was once an ocean? Here are the facts and history."

When thinking about barren areas, the Sahara Desert often comes to mind first. The existence of the Sahara Desert is so famous with all the mysteries that will be discussed in the following writing.

One of the hottest and second largest deserts on our planet known as the Sahara Desert, is spread across ten countries in the continent of Africa. Its area exceeds 3,600,000 square miles. However, many are unaware that in the past, the Sahara Desert was not always a vast sandy desert, but rather a time when this area was a vast ocean.

Explanation about the past of the Sahara Desert as a sea will be described in an article quoted from A-Z Animals on Wednesday (13/03).

"Is Sahara formerly a sea?"

Technically, Sahara is not part of the ocean, but the region can be considered as a sea.

The Sahara Desert Used to be an Ocean? Here are the Facts and History

According to experts, the depth of the ocean there reaches 164 feet. This area also covers approximately 1,158 square miles of the existing desert.

The ocean that once covered the Sahara is known as the Trans-Saharan Sea. This sea has existed for 50 to 100 million years ago when the sea level was still high. The remnants of the desert, especially around Mali, resemble grasslands, particularly savannah. Although not a tropical oasis, this desert region has more abundant access to water than the current situation there.

"Mystery of the Sahara Desert"

Why is the Sahara so dry now?

Why is the Sahara so dry now?

How can the Sahara change from a grassland or savannah area into a desert? Although it sounds unusual, this event is a natural cycle that occurs periodically.

Around every 20,000 years, the Sahara undergoes a transformation from a desert into a grassy savannah. This phenomenon occurs as a result of changes in the Earth's orientation while orbiting the sun. However, why this change happens suddenly? There is no definite answer to this question. Scientists know that around 4,500 to 8,000 years ago, the Sahara experienced a rapid change from a fertile and watery region to a dry and hot desert.

It can be concluded that humans and their livestock have a significant impact. Data from sediment layers and pollen show that every time humans bring their livestock to graze in the Sahara region, changes occur in soil conditions. Although the change from previously moist grassland to desert occurs quickly, this event is still considered a natural change. The more dust accumulates, the faster the process until a drastic change finally occurs.

"How can Scientists Know?"

The main reason experts know that the Sahara once had water is because of the existing fossil evidence.

"In a research expedition to the Sahara, fossil remains of several types of catfish and the largest known sea snakes were discovered. "

This discovery raises speculation that the Sahara has undergone geographical changes that have transformed it into a sea, which in turn has allowed the development of giant species. Not only catfish and sea snakes, but the documented presence of other creatures in the region includes long-bodied crocodiles, mangroves, and even some mammals.
