FDA Bans Sunscreen Products Using Waterproof Labels

Dream - The use of sunscreen is very important to protect the skin from the dangers of sun exposure. Without sunscreen, your skin can darken, burn, and potentially develop skin cancer. Especially if your activities are consistently done outdoors. The benefits of sunscreen are what make Sahabat Dream need to use sunscreen from morning until evening. Many recommend reapplying sunscreen every 2-4 hours, especially if the product is washed off by water or sweat.

Label Waterproof Sunscreen Prohibited by FDA, Here's the Dermatologist's Explanation

Some people use sunscreen with waterproof claims to protect the skin from sun exposure while swimming or sweating easily.

"Unfortunately, the claim has been revoked by the Food and Drug Administration or FDA, which is an organization that functions similar to BPOM in Indonesia. The statement was expressed by Dermatologist Yessica Tania through Instagram @dr.yessicatania. She explained the reasons why the claim was revoked."

"Because water and sweat can 'remove' sunscreen from the skin. So, the FDA prohibits the claim of waterproof sunscreen!"

Although, the FDA allows water resistant sunscreen claims. The claim explains how long the sunscreen will last on wet skin to provide maximum protection from sun exposure.

Usually, water resistant sunscreen will last for 40 minutes and its effectiveness remains in the water. However, you still need to reapply it after being exposed to water or sweating.

There is also a claim of a very water resistant sunscreen that provides effective protection for 80 minutes in the water. Of course, you still have to reapply sunscreen afterwards. If necessary, clean your face before reapplying sunscreen to prevent dust or dirt contamination.

"Although our skin remains dry during that time, it is still recommended to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours! Or every 40 and 80 minutes (depending on the sunscreen used)"

said Yessica

Reapplying sunscreen can be done every 2 hours, after using a towel, after sweating, or after swimming and being exposed to water. Use sunscreen sufficiently for the entire face and covered skin area to ensure maximum protection.
