"Dream - Lazada announced that it has conducted layoffs (Termination of Employment) of their employees in Singapore, although the exact number has not been disclosed. This news is quite surprising, as this e-commerce company was claimed to have been successful during the 12.12 year-end promotion last year."
"We are making proactive adjustments to transform our workforce, so that we can better position ourselves for a more agile and efficient way of working to meet future business needs,"
said the spokesperson for Lazada quoted from The Straits Times, Thursday, January 4, 2023.
The translation of "Dream.co.id." from Bahasa to English is simply "Dream.co.id." since it is a proper noun (a website name) and does not require translation. The HTML tags, if any, would remain unchanged.
"Unfortunately, the Lazada spokesperson declined to disclose how many workers in Singapore or Southeast Asia were affected. The spokesperson also did not comment on whether staff had received severance packages."
“Transformasi ini mengharuskan kami menilai kembali kebutuhan tenaga kerja dan struktur operasional kami untuk memastikan bahwa Lazada berada pada posisi yang lebih baik dalam mempersiapkan masa depan bisnis dan sumber daya manusia kami,”
The translation of "ungkapnya." to English is "he/she/it reveals."
The text "Dream.co.id." does not require translation as it is a proper noun (a website name) and remains the same in English. Therefore, the translation while preserving any HTML tags would simply be: "Dream.co.id."
"Alibaba Injects Funds of Around Rp9.8 Trillion"
It is mentioned that the round of layoffs was also conducted in October 2023. The news of this layoff is certainly very surprising considering that in December 2023, Alibaba allocated funds amounting to US$634 million or equivalent to Rp9.8 trillion to Lazada.
Founded in 2012, Lazada is present in six countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Lazada became a subsidiary of Alibaba Group Holding after the Chinese tech giant acquired its shares in 2016 to expand its presence in Southeast Asia. Commenting on the layoffs, Digital Industry Singapore (DISG) executive director Chan Ih-Ming said that they are working with Lazada and the government to find solutions for the employees affected by the layoffs.
“DISG works with Lazada and relevant government agencies to assist affected employees in finding alternative job opportunities,” he said. “While each company must decide the best way to position their business and workforce considering the current economic conditions, the digital economy in Asia continues to grow and we are confident in the long-term growth potential of Singapore's technology sector,” he revealed.
"DISG is a joint office of the Economic Development Board, Enterprise Singapore, and the Infocomm Media Development Authority. Its aim is to transform the way the Government engages with the technology sector, by becoming a single point of contact for the industry. Meanwhile, based on leaks from the Instagram account @ecommurz, the layoffs of Lazada employees have impacted all levels of management, including VP and C-level positions at Lazada's offices in each region."
"Not only that, employees from various divisions such as Customer Care, Product, Procurement, Campaign, Design, Commercial, Platform Governance, Marketing, and Merchandise were also affected by the layoffs."
