Dream - Who is the poorest president in the world? The answer is former President of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, who served from 2010-2015. His extremely simple lifestyle earned him the nickname 'the poorest president in the world'.
"If other presidents live in official residences with various luxurious facilities, President Mujica chooses to live in his wife's farmhouse in the capital, Montevideo. The house looks small and also run-down. According to BBC, there are only two police officers and Manuela, a three-legged dog, guarding outside."
Water for daily use even comes from a well in the backyard overgrown with wild grass. The president and his wife also work on their own land and plant flowers.
"katanya." translates to "he/she said."
One interesting fact about his generosity is that Mujica donates around 90 percent of his monthly salary to charity. His salary becomes equivalent to the average monthly income of Uruguayans.
"I have lived like this almost my entire life," he said while sitting in an old chair in his garden, using the pillow that Manuela, his dog, liked. "I can live well with what I have," he continued.
In 2010, his annual personal wealth was only US$1,800 or equivalent to Rp27.9 million (exchange rate of Rp15,517 per US$), which is equivalent to the price of his 1987 Volkswagen Beetle car. In 2012, Mujica added half of his wife's assets such as land, tractor, and house, amounting to US$215,000 or equivalent to Rp3.3 billion. This amount was only two-thirds of the wealth owned by Vice President Danilo Astori at that time and one-third of the amount owned by Mujica's predecessor as president, Tabare Vasquez.
word Mujica.
Before becoming president, in the 1960s to the 1970s, Mujica was a guerrilla fighter for the Uruguayan Tupamaros, a left-wing armed group inspired by the Cuban revolution. However, he was shot six times and spent 14 years in prison. The majority of his time in detention was spent in harsh and isolated conditions, until he was released in 1985 when Uruguay returned to democracy. Mujica says that his years in prison helped shape his outlook on life.
