This man is pursuing a doctoral education at a university in England. He left his hometown in Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi province, in November last year and returned in April. Yang Hao traveled to 24 provinces in China. He did not bring a mobile phone or a laptop during his journey. He only brought two cameras that cannot connect to the internet.

"Those who study contemporary art at their university and one of their research topics is the impact of digitalization on people's lives. “I feel that the phone is like a digital organ for us. We can't do many things without a phone. So, I want to research what happens if we have no internet access at all. What is the experience like, for example, over several months?” said Yang, quoted from SCMP."

'Based on doubts and reflections about digitalization, I intend to experiment in China to make an exodus without relying on the internet,' said Yang. As a result, Yang said that the discomfort from the absence of a mobile phone was a common occurrence during his journey."

The discomfort, for example, cannot book a hotel in advance or quickly check the map application, it also cannot book a taxi when ordering a vehicle. It also finds that most stores do not provide machines to swipe their bank cards. Sometimes when they do not have enough cash to pay, they have to walk a long way to find an ATM to withdraw money. To address these issues, they need to communicate more with strangers they meet on the street.

“Almost everyone who hears that I don’t use a cell phone is surprised,” said Yang. “Some ask if I’m doing something wrong, some wonder if I have a special job, while others find living without a cell phone interesting,” he recounted. He said that having a mobile phone often serves as a distraction, so during his travels without a cell phone, he can concentrate on reading books or writing.

"I feel like an ancient human who has traveled through time to the present. All the problems and joys make me excited. It is truly an extraordinary life experience," said Yang. Yang plans to publish a book containing articles he wrote about the journey and make a documentary film based on the footage he recorded during the trip.
