Gita started her education in Berlin in 2011 and obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree in Chemistry in 2017 from Freie Universitaät Berlin. Currently, Gita is working at Cosmacon GmbH as a Cosmetic Chemist. Let's take a look at how Gita studied and worked in Germany.

1. Determine Goals and Be Ready to Step Out of the Comfort Zone

The first thing to consider when continuing studies and working abroad is to find a goal. Getting a higher quality education is a strong enough reason to choose a country with better education systems, institutions, and human resources.

In addition, the challenge of stepping out of the comfort zone by entering a more diverse environment can also be a way to develop oneself into an open-minded and critical individual. International job prospects can also motivate us, where the relationships and fields of work encountered will be broader.

2. Determine the Way to Study Abroad

After having a goal, determine the way to study abroad. Not only by directly enrolling through universities to become a full-time student, studies can also start with student exchange programs, summer or winter programs, or transfer programs between universities in the middle of the semester.

For job seekers, the first step can be taken by participating in internship programs, especially in Germany.

Gita explained that choosing a country can consider several points such as the size of the country and the language. Some people choose to live in a large country with a large population, while others prefer to live in quiet and less extensive areas.

The language used can also be a determining factor, as countries that use a certain language will require extra time to learn a new language.

Germany, where Gita currently resides, requires her to learn German for 2 years before starting her studies at the university. In addition to the language, it is also important to find out about transportation modes, living costs, and studies.

"The internet and information from the consulate of each country will make it easier for us to obtain complete information about the destination country." added Gita.

4. Researching Documents and Requirements

Conducting research is very important according to Gita, as the documents and requirements needed in each country and university are different.

Some institutions require us to submit a curriculum vitae, visa, recommendation letters, and language certificates as admission requirements.

In Germany itself, having a bank account and insurance is required as a requirement for obtaining a residence visa, whether as a student or a worker. If we have more funds, there is no need to hesitate to contact service providers to take care of all our needs while living abroad.

5. How to Apply for a Job in Germany

After completing our studies, we can continue by working in another country. In Germany, the way to apply for a job is not different from in Indonesia, it can be done by applying directly or through internship programs.

The work culture in Germany and Indonesia is certainly different, and Gita feels that the most noticeable difference is that the work and private life have clear boundaries, allowing employees to work more professionally. In addition, working hours are very effective with a maximum limit of 10 hours per day.

"Many Germans do not like hierarchy, so there are no boundaries between superiors and subordinates in the workplace. The most important thing is that each employee can complete their work well." added Gita.
