Semarang City Icon, Now More Comfortable to Worship at Baiturrahman Grand Mosque After Renovation President Director of PT Waskita Karya

When in Semarang, it feels incomplete without visiting and worshiping at Baiturrahman Grand Mosque located in Simpang Lima area. As one of the city's pride icons, this mosque is also a cultural heritage that is 50 years old.

When was the last time you worshiped at this mosque, Dream Friend? Have you visited Baiturrahman Grand Mosque after the renovation? Now worshiping feels more comfortable because there have been many additions that make the building look more contemporary after being renovated by one of the professional contractors, PT Waskita Karya.

Through an interview session with the President Director of PT Waskita Karya, Destiawan Soewardjono, learn more about the renovation.

The 50-Year-Old Building's Age Becomes the Reason for Renovation

In the interview, Destiawan explained that the reason for renovating this iconic mosque in Semarang is the building's age, which has reached almost 50 years.

"That's why renovation is needed to check whether there are any weak foundations in the building," explained Destiawan.

He continued that before the renovation, the mosque gave a dark and gloomy impression. The renovation was done to create a sense of freshness that makes it more comfortable for worship.

"The renovation carried out by Waskita also uses the BAS (Building Automation System) system by integrating air conditioning systems, special lighting, and MEP control equipment. It also carries the concept of a smart building, which is one of Semarang City's masterpieces," explained Destiawan.

Instagrammable Gate and Courtyard

With a construction period of about 1 year, the renovation carried out by Waskita Karya has created a new and more contemporary impression. The first thing that is immediately felt is the gate and courtyard that look more attractive.

"The green gate has been replaced with a more Instagrammable view. It no longer obstructs the magnificent view of the mosque's facade. The writing of Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is in white with an elegant brown iron frame in the shape of a comb," he continued.

Meanwhile, in the mosque's courtyard, Destiawan explained that it has been transformed into a contemporary open space with a beautiful garden on both sides separated by a fountain.

"Several trees are neatly planted in that area. Interestingly, besides the drum, the fountain serves as a prayer time indicator. It will only light up according to the schedule of the five daily prayers," revealed Destiawan.

Entrance Access

After passing through the courtyard, visitors will walk towards the entrance, which has marble layered stairs. There are ablution facilities that can be found on the right and left sides with an open green concept.

"Previously, the ablution area was inside the perimeter of the mosque building. Now it has been moved closer to the garden and entrance stairs," said Destiawan.

Now, on the side of the ablution area, there is also a small garden that provides a natural and beautiful impression. What's more, the access to the ablution area is also friendly for people with disabilities as there are benches and lifts, making it easier to enter the mosque.

Changes in the Prayer Area

As you enter the prayer area, there are sturdy pillars with Kufic calligraphy ornaments from Iraq. The interior also presents a brighter and grander atmosphere. On the column walls, there are lights that create a magnificent sparkle on each side.

In addition, there are marble walls that reflect light, giving life to the room. The patterns show tranquility and coolness.

"The smart and green building elements also appear because it is oriented towards the Green Mosque, and not many mosques in Indonesia are like this. The pulpit and mihrab, when viewed, resemble a miniature Kaaba. Thus, creating an atmosphere as if praying in front of the Kaaba," explained Destiawan again.

Destiawan also mentioned that the prayer area has been slightly expanded. From originally having a capacity of 3,800 people, it can now accommodate up to 5,000 worshipers with the addition of prayer areas on the second floor.

"Significant changes have been made to the building's structure. Such as enlarging the previously small columns. Reinforcing fragile concrete. The foundation and beams have also been treated to make them stronger. Currently, Baiturrahman Grand Mosque is also equipped with fire protection and installed with the Building Automation System (BAS). This allows the integrated and computerized operation of electrical elements. So, all Mechanical Electric Programming (MEP) elements can be monitored through the system, from checking, turning on, and turning off with a computer, which is the concept of a smart building," he continued.

The Presence of Basement Parking and Auditorium Area

The renovation of Baiturrahman Grand Mosque also brings changes to the parking area. Previously, there was only surface parking, but now there are 2 basement parking lots for VIP and public. The VIP basement can accommodate 40-50 cars, while the other area, which is still under construction, can accommodate 80-100 cars and 200 motorcycles.

"In the basement area, there is also a hall with a more luxurious and modern interior, which is currently a popular venue for weddings," explained Destiawan.

Maintaining the Distinctive Features

Built in 1974 and now reaching 50 years old, renovation is important for Baiturrahman Grand Mosque. However, PT Waskita Karya still maintains the parts that are the mosque's distinctive features.

"The building's shape, marble, ceiling, and star decorations on the roof are still preserved because they are the mosque's distinctive features," he explained.

After going through the renovation process, Destiawan admitted that the response from the people of Semarang City was very positive regarding their iconic mosque becoming more beautiful.

"Of course, the people of Semarang City are happy. Baiturrahman Mosque has become more beautiful and provides comfort for visitors. Once again, we, Waskita, are proud to be appointed as the contractor for the renovation of this mosque," he concluded.
