Dream - Electrum, a joint venture between PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GoTo) and PT TBS Energi Utama Tbk (TBS), officially started the construction of an electric motor factory in Indonesia.

The factory, located in the GIIC Cikarang area, Bekasi, West Java, will be built on a three-hectare land with a production capacity of up to 250 thousand units per line in the initial phase.

The company aims to complete the construction of this factory by mid-2024 and start production at the same time.

Catherine Hindra Sutjahyo, Director/President of GoTo's On-Demand Services Business Unit, said that the construction of the Electrum factory is a major step for the company to achieve the Zero Emission target by transitioning the fleet to fully electric vehicles by 2030.

“Since the electric motor trial phase in Jakarta, we have made various advancements and witnessed the enthusiasm and positive response from driver partners and consumers,” said Catherine in her official statement on Friday, June 23, 2023.

According to Catherine, the use of electric motors helps driver partners in the ecosystem reduce operational costs. One of the efficiencies that can be obtained is the elimination of fuel costs and transmission oil replacement.

Pandu Sjahrir, CEO of Electrum, said that Electrum will focus on fulfilling the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) while collaborating with domestic industries to support other supporting infrastructure. Planned support includes battery supply and spare parts to create a sustainable electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia.

“(Electrum) Concretely supports the government's target to produce nine million electric motors by 2030, which is also in line with Indonesia's net-zero emission by 2060,” he said.

Not only producing electric motorcycles, the Electrum factory will also be equipped with quality testing laboratories, research and development centers, and testing tracks.

The environmentally friendly factory construction with a green factory concept will also be equipped with energy management systems, waste management systems, and water treatment.

All GoTo Fleet Will Use Electric Vehicles in 2030

Dream - PT Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GoTo) has a big ambition in its efforts to support sustainability. Through the three-zero program, GoTo aims to convert Gojek's fleet from oil-fueled motorcycles to electric motorcycles by 2030.

Tanah Sullivan, Head of Sustainability at Gojek Tokopedia (GoTo) Group, explained during a press conference at the Tokopedia office in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, that the company's three-zero commitment is zero emissions, zero waste, and zero barriers.

For the zero emissions program, Tanah hopes that GoTo can become a carbon-neutral platform and focus on decarbonization efforts in its ecosystem.

One of the targets for implementing zero emissions is the transition of all Gojek's fleet vehicles, both cars and motorcycles, used by partners, to electric vehicles (EVs).

"The target is to switch to electric vehicles before 2030,” said Tanah.

The big target will be carried out gradually, starting with the use of electric motorcycles in the Jabodetabek area with 3,000 units in 2023. Out of that number, 500 driver partners are already operating using electric motorcycles.

“We have been implementing several pilot projects for 2 years. By the end of the year, we will prepare 3,000 electric motorcycles,” said Tanah.

To provide environmentally friendly fleets, GoTo plans to collaborate with several stakeholders. One of them is expected to facilitate installment plans for electric motorcycles used by drivers, which will become their property once fully paid.

It is known that GoTo plans to start the construction of an electric motor factory together with PT TBS Energi Utama Tbk (TOBA) as a joint venture, which will be built in Zone E of the Greenland International Industrial Center (GIIC).
