Formerly Called DPR as 'Betrayal of the People Council', Former Chairman of BEM UI Runs for DPRD DKI Jakarta, Here's His Profile

Dream - Former Chairman of the Executive Board of Students of the University of Indonesia (BEM UI), Manik Marganamahendra, became a topic of conversation after announcing his candidacy as a legislative candidate (caleg) for DPRD DKI Jakarta.

Manik is running as a candidate from the Perindo Party for Dapil 6 East Jakarta in the 2024 General Elections. He caught attention because in 2019 he criticized the DPR with the term 'Betrayal of the People Council'.

At that time, Manik mobilized students to hold demonstrations in front of the DPR building to reject the Criminal Code Bill and the revision of the KPK Law.

Now, he is diving into the world of politics because he feels it is important to bring the aspirations of the people so that they are not disconnected in the field.

Manik admitted that the candidacy is one of the most complicated and difficult decisions to make.

“I am sure there will be those who feel betrayed, there will be those who feel not in line, there will be disappointment,” he wrote on his Instagram account @marganamahendra.

“If you also feel called to move in this 'systemic movement', allow me to ask for criticism, input, and advice.”

Profile of Manik Marganamahendra

Manik Marganamahendra is known as the Chairman of the Student Executive Board (BEM) UI 2019, serving until 2020.

Previously, he was the Chairman of the BEM Faculty of Public Health (FKM) from 2018 to 2019.

Manik started studying at UI in 2015, majoring in Public Health.

He is active in the Model United Nations Club, the Department of Studies and Strategic Actions of BEM FKM UI, the FKM UI Debate Team for OIM UI 2016, the Indonesian Public Health Student Senate (ISMKMI), and the Indonesian Health Student Organization Alliance (AOMKI).

As a graduate of the Public Health program, Manik focuses on tobacco control.

In 2020, he worked on advocacy at the National Committee on Tobacco Control until early 2023.

Currently, he is active in Think Policy Indonesia as a coalition management officer and the Indonesian Youth Council for Tobacco Control (IYCTC) as a team leader.

In 2022, he participated in the Abang None Jakarta Timur event and emerged as one of the finalists, namely the 2nd Hope Champion of Abang Jakarta.
