That's what happened to a man in Turkey who accidentally discovered a secret city while trying to demolish a wall in his basement.

The man, whose name is unknown, lived in Derinkuyu, in the Cappadocia region of central Turkey.

The Largest Underground City

Cappadocia is famous for its unique rock formations shaped by wind and rain, also known as fairy chimneys.

The soft rock called tuff is easily carved, and for thousands of years the local residents have dug caves and tunnels for various purposes.

But no one expected the man to discover a secret city in his house in 1963. He had found the Derinkuyu Underground City, the largest in Cappadocia.

The Amazing Sight

As reported by Daily Viral, this city is a wonder. With 8 floors high and 280 feet deep, the underground city can accommodate up to 20,000 people.

The city has all the facilities for human life. Including schools, wells, ventilation holes, and even wineries.

Stone Doors

The city also has stone doors that can be closed across the entrance to hide the city from enemies.

Archaeologists estimate that the city is over a millennium old. The city is believed to have been built by local Christians as a place of refuge from persecution and raids.

Interestingly, the city is connected to other underground cities through long tunnels, some of which are still unexplored.

Now, the Derinkuyu Underground City is open to the public as a museum, attracting thousands of visitors every year.
