According to the Department of Information and Public Relations of Mizoram India, the tragedy occurred at 5:30 p.m. in Sairang, the state of Mizoram, India. The bridge was meant to connect the capital city.

As reported by Daily Star, the 51.48-kilometer bridge was the only access to connect the capital city of Mizoram, Aizawl, with other parts of India.

This incident shocked many because the bridge was supposed to be used in the next five months.

"A railway bridge that is still under construction in Sairang, near Aizawl, collapsed today; at least 17 workers died: rescue operations are still ongoing," quoted the Twitter account @Zoramthanga.

According to reports, about 40 workers were at the site when part of the bridge structure suddenly collapsed.

The authorities are currently investigating to determine the exact cause of the incident through a "high-level investigation committee."

Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and announced assistance for those affected.

Compensation of around £1,900 or approximately Rp36.5 million will be given to the families of the deceased victims.

"We are deeply saddened and affected by this tragedy. We send our deepest condolences to all grieving families and wish a speedy recovery for the injured. Also, our gratitude goes to all those involved in the rescue operation," he said.

The Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, also announced separate compensation for the victims who died or were injured in this accident, although the full details are still unknown.

The Head of Nanga Taman Subdistrict, Gunawan, said that the duck-catching competition was held in the river below the bridge. At that time, several people were watching from the bridge.

However, suddenly the bridge collapsed, causing dozens of people on the bridge to fall into the river. Some residents who were under the bridge were also injured.

The Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Sekadau Regency, Akhmad Suryadi, stated that the victims were immediately evacuated to the local health center for treatment.

A total of 28 people were injured, and five of them suffered broken bones as a result of the incident.
