Jokowi's Strong Statement at the BRICS Summit: 'The Current World Economic Order is Very Unfair'

Dream - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) believes that the current world economic order is unfair. The widening economic development gap between developing countries and other countries has caused suffering for the people.

The President's statement was made during the BRICS-Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue session at the 15th BRICS Summit held at the Sandton Convention Center in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, on Thursday, August 24, 2023.

"We all see that the current world economic order is very unfair, the development gap is widening, and the number of poor and hungry people is increasing," said the President as quoted from the setkab website on Friday, August 25, 2023.

Seeing this situation, Jokowi calls on all developing countries to unite and fight for their rights for the progress of their respective countries.

"Developing countries must unite to fight for their rights," he said.

The President also stated that BRICS member countries can play an important role in advocating for development justice for all countries in the world.

"BRICS can be at the forefront of advocating for development justice and reforming a fairer world governance," he said.

The former Governor of Jakarta also mentioned that all forms of discrimination against the progress of developing countries must be eliminated, and equal and inclusive cooperation must continue to be advocated.

"Trade discrimination must be rejected. Industrial downstreaming must not be hindered. We must all continue to advocate for equal and inclusive cooperation," said the President in front of the leaders of BRICS member countries and several other world leaders.

Seeing this, President Jokowi firmly emphasized that this situation must be resolved immediately. "This situation cannot be allowed to continue," he concluded.
