Dream - Melasma or chloasma, often referred to as "pregnancy mask," is a skin condition that frequently appears in pregnant women. This condition is characterized by patches on the face that are darker in color than the original skin tone.
Hyperpigmentation does not cause any pain, it is not dangerous. It also does not have any negative impact on the baby. In fact, the symptoms will disappear after giving birth. However, many pregnant women lose their self-confidence because of this.
"For moms who are worried about this, there are several ways that can be done to alleviate melasma symptoms. But first, let's find out the facts about this skin condition!"
Increased pregnancy hormones, especially estrogen and progesterone, can cause melasma or hyperpigmentation on the skin. Loretta Ciraldo, a skin doctor in Miami, Florida, also explains that hormonal changes during pregnancy can increase the production of melanin, a substance that gives color to the skin, hair, and eyes.
"There are other factors that can increase the risk of melasma, such as a family history of this condition and darker skin types. This is because skin with more pigmentation tends to produce more melanin," said Ciraldo.
Melasma is a condition of skin discoloration that appears darker than the original skin color. Generally, melasma can be brown, tan, or gray. This hyperpigmentation can appear as small spots or larger patches.
Can appear in areas such as cheeks, upper lips, forehead, nose, and chin. Although melasma is not accompanied by itching, swelling, or pain, this condition looks like irritation during pregnancy, but does not harm the baby's development.
"Usually, people who experience melasma also experience linea nigra as well as darkening of the nipples or other areas of the skin. You can consult with a doctor if moms are worried about changes in the skin during this pregnancy."
According to Ashley Magovern, MD, a certified dermatologist and medical director for Dermstore.com, melasma can occur at any time during pregnancy. "Many pregnant women experience 'pregnancy mask' during the second or third trimester when hormone levels are at their highest," she said.
Mothers don't need to worry. Melasma symptoms will gradually fade naturally within a few weeks or months after giving birth, when hormones in the body return to balance.
1. Use sunscreen Ultraviolet (UV) rays can accelerate changes in skin pigmentation. By regularly applying sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, your skin will be protected from the sun's rays. 2. Stay in the shade In addition to using sunscreen, avoid direct sunlight by following this method, especially during the day. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat can also help.
3. Avoid products that contain synthetic fragrances. This is because synthetic fragrances often contain ingredients that can cause allergic reactions and skin irritation, which can worsen melasma. 4. Use products that contain antioxidants. This can help reduce uneven pigmentation.
"In addition to the methods mentioned above, moms can also treat melasma with vitamin C or azelaic acid during pregnancy. Meanwhile, for other treatments after pregnancy and breastfeeding, you can use topical medications, chemical skin exfoliation, laser treatments, and many more.
