Two new species from the iconic and unique group of dinosaurs have been discovered in North America. In a study published in the journal Papers in Palaeontology, researchers found these two species, one in eastern Montana and the other in southern Alberta, Canada.
This species belongs to a group of dinosaurs known as pachycephalosaurus, which have a unique feature in their heads. They existed during the late Cretaceous period, approximately 145 to 66 million years ago, before a major extinction event that resulted in the loss of most living creatures on Earth, including all non-avian dinosaur species.
"Pachycephalosaurus is a 'domed-head' dinosaur. They walk on two legs and eat plants, but what makes them so iconic and strange is that most of them have a large solid bone mass in the shape of a big ball on top of their heads."
Cary Woodruff, a paleontologist at the Phillip & Patricia Frost Museum of Science and author of the research, told Newsweek.

Woodruff and his colleagues described these two new species based on a skull bone, called squamosal.
The researchers named the species found in Montana as Sphaerotholus triregnum, while the one found in Alberta was named Sphaerotholus lyonsi.

Woodruff states that both are estimated to be about 6 feet long from nose to tail, while the dome above their heads is the size of an orange. This newly discovered dinosaur belongs to the species group Pachycephalosaurus, similar to the dog-sized Sphaerotholus.
