Sheikh Muhammad bin Salih Al-Uthaymeen once received a question "Lately, among women, there have been 'abayahs (outerwear/robe) with narrow sleeves and adorned with embroidery or other decorations. There are also some women's 'abayahs with very thin sleeves." Sheikh Uthaymeen answered with a lengthy response. According to him, the Muslim community has an important principle regarding the issue of dressing for Muslim women. The original ruling regarding clothing, drinks, food, and all matters related to transactions is permissible or allowed. So, no one can prohibit it unless there is evidence indicating its prohibition.

Allah SWT said: هُوَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ لَكُمْ مَا فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا. Artinya: "He is Allah, who created everything on earth for you." (Quran Surah Al-Baqarah: 29)

"Allah SWT also said in another verse:"
قُلْ مَنْ حَرَّمَ زِينَةَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي أَخْرَجَ لِعِبَادِهِ وَالطَّيِّبَاتِ مِنَ الرِّزْقِ "Katakanlah: "Siapakah yang mengharamkan perhiasan dari Allah yang Telah dikeluarkan-Nya untuk hamba-hamba-Nya dan (siapa pulakah yang mengharamkan) reezki yang baik?" Katakanlah: "Semuanya itu (disediakan) bagi orang-orang yang beriman dalam kehidupan dunia, khusus (untuk mereka saja) di hari kiamat.""

"(Quran Surat Al-A'raf: 32)" translates to "(Quran Surah Al-A'raf: 32)" in English.

"Meaning of Verse"

The meaning of the verse is that everything that is not prohibited is allowed by Allah. Except if there is a sharia evidence that forbids it, such as the prohibition of gold and silk for men.

According to the verse, there is an implied meaning that wearing a baju kurung (traditional Malay dress) filled with embroidery is considered tabarruj (displaying) adornment, and this style is prohibited for Muslim women. Tabarruj that is prohibited for Muslim women is carrying or wearing accessories that have shapes or motifs that can attract attention and invite slander.

Shaykh Muhammad bin Salih Al-Uthaymeen said, "Wearing high heels (for women) is not allowed if it is outside of the norm for women, as it leads to tabarruj (displaying beauty and attractiveness), making women's adornments visible and drawing attention from men. This is because Allah Almighty says, 'And do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance' (Quran, Al-Ahzab: 33)."

Wearing a hijab that does not cover the body, such as a hijab that is only draped over the shoulders. This clearly contradicts Islamic law, as the true purpose of a hijab is to cover a Muslim woman's hair. Wearing fragrance and makeup that can arouse the opposite sex's desire when outside the house. Clothing that resembles men's clothing. Dressing flamboyantly, which means clothing that is different in style from the typical Muslimah clothing with the aim of showing off and being more recognized.
