In the Quran, Baitul Maqdis is called Masjidil Aqsha, which is blessed as explained in Surah Al-Isra' verse 1. سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي أَسْرَىٰ بِعَبْدِهِ لَيْلًا مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ الْأَقْصَى الَّذِي بَارَكْنَا حَوْلَهُ لِنُرِيَهُ مِنْ آيَاتِنَا ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُ Translation: "Glory be to Him who made His servant travel by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose surroundings We have blessed, in order to show him some of Our signs. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing."

Rasulullah SAW said: "A creature was brought to me, taller than a donkey but shorter than a mule, its stride reaching as far as its eyes could see. So I rode it accompanied by Angel Jibril and set off. Jibril said: 'Descend and pray!' So I (descended and) prayed. Jibril said: 'Do you know where you just prayed? You prayed in Taibah (Madinah), the place of your migration.' Then Jibril said again, 'Descend and pray!' So I prayed. Jibril said, 'Do you know where you just prayed? You prayed on Mount Thur Sina, the place where Allah spoke directly to Musa."

Jibril said again, "Descend and pray!" So I descended and performed the prayer, then Jibril said, "Do you know where you prayed just now? You prayed in Baitul Lahm, the place where Isa was born." Then I entered Baitul Maqdis, and all the Prophets were gathered with me, and Angel Jibril led me forward until I became their imam. After that, Jibril took me up to the first heaven, then to the seventh heaven, and finally to Sidratul Muntaha. There, the Prophet received the command to perform the five daily prayers from Allah, which previously were fifty prayers a day.

From another source, Ibn Abi Hatim said, from Anas bin Malik narrated that on the night the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) underwent Isra to Baitul Maqdis, the Angel Gabriel came to him carrying an animal larger than a donkey but smaller than a mule (Buraq), and then the Angel Gabriel lifted the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) onto the animal. Then, the front legs of the animal took steps as far as the eye could see. After arriving at Baitul Maqdis and reaching a place called Babu Muhammad (Door of Muhammad), they headed towards a stone in that place. Gabriel then pierced it with his index finger until it became hollow, and the animal was tied to that place.

At that time, the angels were sitting on the left side of Sakhrah. So I came to meet them and greeted them, and they returned my greeting. Then I asked, "Who are you?" They answered, "We are the good and beautiful angels, the wives of the righteous people, who are free from any sins; they reside (in paradise) and will not leave it, and they live forever and will not die (forever)." Then I left.

Not long after, I saw many people had gathered, then the call to prayer was proclaimed and after that the call to iqamah for prayer was proclaimed. So we stood in rows, waiting for the person who would lead us in prayer. It turned out that Jibril held my hand and brought me forward to become the imam. So I prayed with them. After finishing the prayer, Jibril asked me, "O Muhammad, do you know who the people who prayed behind you earlier are?" The Prophet answered, "I don't know." Jibril said, "The people who prayed behind you earlier are all the Prophets sent by Allah."

"Then Jibril held my hand and took me up to the sky until the Prophet reached Sidratul Muntaha and faced Allah and received the command to pray five times a day. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, 'When the people of Quraysh denied the event of my journey to Baitul Maqdis, I stood in Hijr Ismail and Allah showed me Baitul Maqdis. So I described to them its distinctive features while looking in the direction of the view that Allah showed me.' (Narrated by Ahmad)"
