Are Javanese Stingrays Extinct? Evidence Begins to Surface

An international team led by Charles Darwin University (CDU) has stated that the Java stingray, which was only recorded once at the end of the 19th century, is extinct.

The loss of the Javanese stingray species marks the first marine fish extinction caused by human activity. This news emerged alongside the latest release of the Red List of Threatened Species from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Causes of the Extinction of the Javanese Stingaree Fish.

The researchers have designed a new model that combines all available information about this species, and the results indicate that the Javanese Stingaree has become extinct. Julia Constance, a research expert from CDU, stated that several factors have contributed to the extinction of the Javanese ray.

"This is also due to intensive fish capture and the lack of regulation that has led to a drastic decline in the population of the Javanese stingray. This evidence is revealed from data showing a decrease in coastal fish catch in the Java Sea in the 1870s."

The northern coastal region of Java, particularly the Jakarta Bay which is the location of this species, has also become a major industrial center. As a result, there has been significant loss and long-term damage to the habitat. The impact is so severe that it has led to the extinction of this species.

"In evaluating the future of the Java Stingaree fish, the team examined threats that are often suspected, such as overfishing and habitat loss. They also conducted surveys to track whether this species is documented in fish market activities."

"Benaya Simeon, a doctoral candidate from CDU who is researching endangered ray fish in Indonesia, stated that although surveys have been conducted extensively since 2001, no additional specimens have been successfully found."

"The Javanese stingray has a unique size, about the size of a dinner plate, and no similar species has been found in Java. The fact that this species has not appeared in surveys conducted countless times confirms its extinction," he said."
