"Dream - Owners of antique books that are over 100 years old are reminded to be cautious. A study by scientists found toxins that could endanger health. Quoting the website metro.co.uk, the harmful substances from old books over 100 years old are in the form of toxic dyes. These substances contain lead and chromium up to six times the permissible limit."

The researchers urge the public to handle with care or, if possible, to stay away from brightly colored cloth-covered books from the Victorian era.

According to scientists, the dye used to make the thick cover can cause damage to the brain and nervous system if exposed to high levels of lead. Even the risk of coma to death could occur. Chemistry student, Mrs. Hoermann along with chemistry assistant professor Dr. Joseph Weinstein-Webb, fellow student Leila Ais, and recent graduate Jafer Aljorani conducted tests using three techniques.

"One of them has not even been applied to books to assess hazardous dyes in university book collections. As a result, they found that some volumes may not be safe to handle. The concentration of metals in some book covers was found to exceed the legally acceptable limits for chronic exposure."

"In the dissolved sample from the most contaminated cover, the lead concentration was more than twice the limit set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), while the chromium concentration was nearly six times higher."

"Chronic exposure to inhaled lead or chromium can cause health problems including cancer, lung damage, or fertility issues."

"Facing this situation, several books have been removed from the library shelves while other books from the 19th century that have not been tested have been sealed in ziplock bags for handling and storage. 'These old books with toxic dyes may be found in universities, public libraries, and private collections,' said research co-author Abigail Hoermann from Lipscomb University in Nashville."
