Dream - A Japan Airlines (JAL) aircraft carrying 379 passengers caught fire at Haneda Airport, Tokyo, on Tuesday, January 2, 2024. According to the flight tracking website, FlightAware, the Japanese aircraft was an Airbus A350-900. Commercial flight number 516 caught fire after flying to Haneda from the northern city of Sapporo, Japan, at 17:47 local time.

The recording shows a JAL plane moving and then catching fire with a large ball of fire. Passengers tried to exit the plane using emergency slides to escape. Live footage on NHK television station shows the plane burning as it slid on the runway. Meanwhile, firefighters are making a strong effort to control the blaze.

According to the airline, all the flight crew and passengers, including eight children under the age of two, were successfully evacuated from the aircraft. JAL is currently investigating the details and cause of the aircraft fire, said a representative from the airline to CNN. As a result of this incident, Haneda Airport has closed all runways following the incident.

One of the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) units has also confirmed to CNN that one of its aircraft, most likely MA722 fixed-wing, collided with commercial flight 516 on the runway of Haneda Airport. One person from the Coast Guard aircraft has managed to survive, but the other five individuals have not been found yet.

A spokesperson from JCG told CNN that a JCG aircraft is heading from Haneda airport to the JCG air base in Niigata prefecture to assist in relief efforts following a 7.5 magnitude Richter scale earthquake that occurred on Monday, January 1, 2024.
