Unlike other voluntary prayers, the Prophet Muhammad PBUH taught that the Witr prayer should be performed with an odd number of units, either one unit, three units, five units, or a maximum of eleven units. The recommendation to perform the Witr prayer can be found in several hadiths. The Prophet Muhammad PBUH once said, "(The prayer) Witr is the right of every Muslim. Whoever prefers to perform Witr with five units, then let him do so, and whoever prefers to perform Witr with one unit, then let him do so," (Narrated by Abu Daud and Nasa'i).

In another hadith, it is narrated that Aisha RA said: "The Prophet SAW prayed 11 rak'ahs between the Isha prayer and the dawn. He would give salam after every two rak'ahs and perform the Witr prayer with one rak'ah," (Sahih Hadith, narrated by Muslim: 1216). There are so many virtues of the Witr prayer for the Muslim ummah, so in its implementation, it is necessary to pay attention to its conditions and pillars. Every night, Prophet Muhammad SAW used to perform the witir prayer at the beginning of the night, middle of the night, end of the night, and it would end at the time of dawn.

Actually, the witir prayer is not included in the recommended voluntary prayers to be performed in congregation. However, scholars of the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools of thought, as well as some scholars of the Maliki school of thought, believe that during the month of Ramadan, the voluntary witir prayer should be performed in congregation. So, it is recommended to perform the witir prayer in congregation after the tarawih prayer.

However, this recommendation does not apply to those who plan to perform tahajud prayer after waking up from sleep in the middle of the night. Those who believe they can wake up from sleep in the middle of the night to perform tahajud prayer and other sunnah prayers in the month of Ramadan are advised to perform witir prayer alone at the end of the night.

One of the basic opinions is the hadith narrated by Imam Muslim, that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) once said:
"Whoever among you is worried about not being able to wake up in the late night, let them perform Witr prayer and then sleep. And whoever is confident about waking up in the late night, let them perform Witr prayer at the end of the night, because the recitation in the late night is attended by (the Angels) and it is more virtuous."
