"Dream - A man in Vietnam nearly lost his life after inserting a live eel into his anus. Fortunately, the medical team at Viet Duc Hospital successfully performed emergency surgery to save the life of the 31-year-old man."
According to Oddity Central, the medical team was shocked to find a live eel inside his stomach. The animal had bitten through the intestine and entered the abdominal cavity.
"While groaning and screaming in pain, the man told the doctor at Viet Duc Hospital, Hanoi, Vietnam, that he had inserted an eel through his anus."
The doctors initially did not believe that there was an eel living in the human body. However, X-ray and ultrasonography (USG) examinations showed a horizontal radiopaque skeleton in the man's abdominal cavity, which turned out to be a live eel.
"The hospital quickly formed a team of endoscopy and anesthesia experts. After that, they performed a colonoscopy to try to remove the eel. However, the procedure was challenging for the doctors due to the eel being slippery and difficult to grasp."
The doctor finally chose to perform surgery on the man's abdomen. They were shocked to find a live eel approximately 65 cm long with a body circumference of 10 cm. The Deputy Director of the Colorectal and Pelvic Floor Surgery Center at Viet Duc Hospital, Le Nhat Huy, said that the eel had "attacked" the man. The eel had bitten the rectum and large intestine.
"The eel has bitten the patient's rectum and large intestine to escape into the abdominal cavity. Eels can survive in anaerobic conditions for a long time and have the ability to bite through the digestive tract," he said. Not only the eel, the doctor also successfully removed a lemon from the man's body. After the surgery, the doctor sealed the rectum and re-stitched the large intestine, and performed a colostomy or a procedure to create an opening in the abdomen that serves as a waste disposal channel (feces)."
