Dream - A mother of a drug dealer from the Philippines who is awaiting the death penalty in Indonesia is pleading to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to free her daughter. Quoting from Barrons.com, the family and supporters of Mary Jane Veloso held a protest near the presidential palace in Manila while Jokowi met with President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.
The application was submitted a day after the Philippines filed a clemency plea for Veloso, who was arrested in Indonesia in 2010. The woman sentenced to death was arrested for carrying a suitcase containing 2.6 kilograms (5.7 pounds) of heroin.
The following is the translation of the given 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "This mother of two children received a last-minute reprieve from the firing squad in 2015, after a woman suspected of recruiting her was arrested in the Philippines."
As for the letter written by Veloso's mother, Celia, and addressed to Widodo, it was delivered directly to the palace by a lawyer representing the family.
"\u201cI beg and plead to you to help free my daughter who has suffered innocently for fourteen years,\u201d said Celia Veloso in her letter.\u201cToday is my daughter's birthday (39)...\u201d she wrote."
Supporters of Veloso claim that the detained woman went to Indonesia to work as a housemaid. However, she was deceived by an international drug syndicate to carry heroin.
The separate letter from the family addressed to Marcos reads: "You are our only hope."
"Not Mentioned in the Speech"
Both Marcos and Widodo did not mention Veloso's case in their speeches which were delivered to the media after their meeting.
Therefore, it is not known whether Jokowi received the letter or discussed it in their conversation.
