"It Feels Like a Punishment! Israeli Soldiers Die from Fungal Infections Resistant to Medication from Gaza, Trembling as It Spreads Across the Country"

Like Being Punished! Israeli Soldiers Die from Fungal Infections Resistant to Medication from Gaza, Spreading Fear Across the Country

"Dream – The death of a soldier who was severely wounded during the war in the Gaza Strip has made Israel worried. This is because the soldier, who is being treated in an Israeli hospital for serious injuries, has developed a dangerous fungal infection."

"Israel is concerned that the disease from Gaza could affect troops on the ground and potentially spread to civilians. The Times of Israel, citing a report from the public broadcaster Kan, reported that the soldier was taken to Assuta Ashdod Medical Center two weeks ago with severe limb injuries. Although the soldier had received intensive care, the fungus was resistant to treatment until the soldier died from his wounds."

The military medical officials are still unaware of the cause of his death, but they confirmed that there are several cases of similar fungal infections among the wounded soldiers returning from Gaza. According to Professor Nadav Davidovitch, an epidemiologist who heads the Negev School of Public Health at Ben-Gurion University, all Israeli hospitals have reported that the majority of the returning wounded soldiers are suffering from serious infections that are resistant to the antimicrobials they acquired through contact with contaminated soil, as well as several other factors.

"It notes that currently, not many soldiers are suffering from the diseases that are spreading among the residents of Gaza."

"The war between Israel and Hamas has caused devastation across much of the Gaza Strip. Most Palestinian residents have been displaced, living in refugee camps and under the rubble. This situation has led to the spread of various diseases that could potentially threaten hundreds of thousands of Israeli soldiers fighting in Gaza. These diseases are feared to pose public health issues in Israel."

The Office of the Spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces said there is no outbreak of infectious disease among their soldiers. However, public health experts warn that it may only take a short time before some or all diseases in Gaza spread to Israel through troops returning from the battlefield or vice versa.

“Diseases do not have borders. We need to address this situation seriously,” said Davidovitch. According to Davidovitch, infections that are resistant to antimicrobials have been a major problem in Gaza for years, due to inappropriate antibiotic use or patients’ failure to complete treatment due to a lack of medication. Professor Galia Rahav, head of the Israeli Infectious Diseases Association, shares the same opinion as Davidovitch in a recent interview with the Hebrew-language media Ynet.

"He added that the presence of highly resistant bacteria in Gaza has been well documented thanks to joint Israeli-Gazan research."

"The hospital in Gaza is a breeding ground for superbugs. Before the war, Gaza patients would bring them to Israeli hospitals when they came for surgery and treatment, which sometimes led to serious outbreaks in the wards.
“To be clear – wounded IDF soldiers are not treated in Gaza hospitals. They contract these infections because the bacteria, fungi, or parasites are in the soil or mud in Gaza where they lie until they are evacuated. They have deep and open wounds that are infected by microbes,” explained Davidovitch."
