Dream - Stan Larkin, a man from Michigan, United States, lived for 555 days without a heart. Throughout that time, he had to always carry an artificial heart in his backpack.
Larkin mentioned, inside the bag there are resources for an artificial heart that is pumped into his chest. He was diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD), which is a form of cardiomyopathy, a condition of abnormality in the heart muscle that causes irregular heartbeats, and carries a high risk of causing heart failure and sudden death.
When he was 16 years old, he once collapsed on the field after playing basketball. As it threatened his life, the doctor immediately installed a defibrillator to monitor activity and temporarily fix Larkin's heart. Then his condition developed into bi-ventricular dysplasia, where both heart chambers were unable to pump blood. Eventually, Larkin was placed on the heart transplant waiting list.
According to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network in America, an average of 22 people die every day while waiting for a heart donor.
Cardiologist specialist, Dr. Jonathan Haft, a cardiac surgeon professor at the University of Michigan, said he first met Larkin while in the ICU room with a number of life-supporting devices and tubes. Haft was highly skeptical of the artificial device. But Haft knew this was the best way to keep Larkin alive until he could receive a suitable heart organ.
In November 2014, the doctor removed Larkin's heart and replaced it with an artificial heart weighing 418 pounds. "Most people would be afraid to rely on an artificial heart for a long time. But I just want to tell them that you have to overcome that fear, because it helps you," said Larkin as quoted from Unilad.
"I went home so quickly after the transplant because it helps me stay healthy before the transplant," he added. Unfortunately, those waiting for a transplant have to wait for years to receive treatment. This certainly causes the health of heart transplant survivors to decline and they will have difficulty in performing the transplant surgery."
"Many of these patients have very weak hearts, kidneys, livers, and other vital organs that will fail to function while they wait for (transplantation). Many of these patients will die without any form of support," said cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Billy Cohn.
The machine is nicknamed "Big Blue," which makes it lying in bed. Then, a new device was created, a lighter portable Freedom driver that has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The device weighs 13.5 pounds, becoming a temporary heart for Larkin. Larkin is able to carry it in a backpack. "It's like a real heart. It feels like carrying a backpack with books inside, like when you go to school," said Larkin.
Larkin became the first person to live a long life with an artificial heart device, before finally receiving a new heart in May at the University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center.
