"Dream - Nobel laureate from Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, will lead his country temporarily after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted and fled abroad. "The decision to form a temporary government with... Yunus as its leader was made during a meeting between President Mohammed Shahabuddin, military leaders, and leaders of the protesting student groups," said President Mohammed Shahabuddin's press secretary, Joynal Abedin, as quoted by Aljazeera, Wednesday, August 7, 2024."

"The president has asked the people to help address this crisis. The formation of a temporary government is urgently needed to tackle this crisis," he added.

Other members of Yunus's government will be decided soon after discussions with political parties and other stakeholders. Shahabuddin said the president also dismissed the national police chief involved in the student protests and appointed his replacement. The president also ordered the release of opposition leader Khaleda Zia from house arrest. Zia is Hasina's rival who was convicted on corruption charges in 2018.

The decision was made after student protest leaders, heads of three military divisions, civil society members, and several business leaders held a meeting with the president for more than five hours on Tuesday night.

"Yunus was chosen as the leader of the interim government with the support of student group leaders who organized protest actions. The student protest leaders also repeatedly stated that they do not accept a government led by the military. Yunus's spokesperson said that he accepted the request. However, Yunus will return to Bangladesh after undergoing medical procedures in Paris, France. He is there as an advisor to the organizer of the 2024 Olympics."

Siapa Muhammad Yunus?

The translation of "Siapa Muhammad Yunus?" to English is "Who is Muhammad Yunus?"

"Muhammad Yunus (83) is a pioneer of microfinance in Bangladesh. He is an economist, banker, as well as a political opponent and critic of Hasina."

"Yunus is known as a banker for the poorest of the poor. Born in Chittagong in 1940, Yunus was a strong supporter of Bangladesh's independence during the war between the country and Pakistan in 1971. Yunus worked as an economics lecturer at Chittagong University when famine struck Bangladesh in 1974. Low-income villagers were forced to take out loans with very high interest rates."

As a result, many people are forced to work as slaves to pay off debts. Inspired by that incident, Yunus founded Grameen Bank in 1983. The bank provides loans to the poor, especially women, without collateral. Repayment of money only depends on trust among community members.

The bank successfully lifted the community out of poverty. Yunus's success led him to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. At that time, more than 7 million citizens had received loans with easy terms from his bank.
