Dream - Hearing the history of independence from the perspective of our own nation is certainly something we have often heard. However, what would it be like if the story of our nation was told from the perspective of the colonizers?
That is what is seen in a museum in the Netherlands, which contains many historical objects and documentation of Indonesia's journey to independence. In the museum called Tropenmuseum located in the city of Amsterdam, these historical objects are told from the perspective of the nation that colonized Indonesia for 3.5 centuries.
A netizen shared the atmosphere inside the Tropenmuseum through a video on the TikTok account @ajeng.kamaratih_.
In the front part of the museum, there are reliefs depicting the life of the Dutch East Indies society during the VOC occupation. They can be found on the walls as well as the museum pillars. Interestingly, the museum does not hide how harsh the VOC was towards the Dutch East Indies population.
Relief tells the story of their trade politics, including forced cultivation that made the VOC even richer. Not only that, this museum also explains whether the items found there are spoils of colonialism or not.
"One of the interesting historical objects that attracts the attention of museum visitors is the relief at Borobudur Temple that they brought to the Netherlands, then painted white. 'One interesting thing they brought from Indonesia is the white-painted relief of Borobudur,' narrated in the video."
"Not only that, at the Tropenmuseum, the journey of Indonesia to achieve its independence is also narrated, which is purely a struggle and not a gift from the colonizers."
"In the video, photos of Indonesian national heroes and figures such as Mohammad Hatta, Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Martha Christina Tiahahu, RA. Kartini, and others are also shown."
"Although it once colonized Indonesia for a very long time, the video recorder conveys that the museum clearly explains the history of Indonesian independence. “During the Museum in the Netherlands🇳🇱 Story about Indonesia 🇮🇩“ writes the caption of the video."
After being uploaded, the video then went viral on social media and garnered various responses from netizens in the comment section. "Remember, little brothers and sisters, FREEDOM IS ACHIEVED THROUGH OUR OWN STRUGGLE, NOT THROUGH HANDOUTS," wrote the account @bapakmu4549. "If only the museums in Indonesia were cool and grand, surely many young people would be interested in history. Look at the Trowulan Museum, it's so ancient," wrote the account @tentangsahabat_official. "The evidence of their history is actually more complete in the Netherlands than in Indonesia, archives and all," wrote the account @yax.ya. "It means being honest according to the facts," wrote the account @yuwonoyudi1. "Their historical manuscripts are more complete than ours, you know," wrote the account @indonesia.uncovered.
