The provisions regarding the intention of fasting are stated in a hadith of Hafsah Ummul Mukminin RA, the Prophet Muhammad SAW said:

A Muslim who makes up for fasting in Ramadan on Monday hopes to gain rewards from two fasts, namely the qadha fast and the sunnah fast. Fasting on Monday and Thursday is recommended for Muslims. Therefore, it is not surprising that when making up for fasting, many Muslims do it on Monday and Thursday. Another positive aspect is that you can fast together with friends or colleagues who are observing sunnah fasting on those two days.
