Prof Dr Mohammad Mahfud MD, SH SU MIP was born in Sampang, Madura, East Java on May 13, 1957. Mahfud MD is the child of Mahmodin and Suti Khadijah.

The man who currently serves as the Menkopolhukam (Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs) has an illustrious track record, not only in the political field but also in the academic and professional fields. He has held important positions in the three pillars of state power, namely the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. Mahfud MD began his career as an academician when he became a Professor at the Faculty of Law, Islamic University of Indonesia (UII) in Yogyakarta.

After that, he entered the bureaucracy and government when he was appointed as the Expert Staff to the Minister of State for Human Rights Affairs in 1999-2000. He had his first opportunity to become a minister when Abdurrahman Wahid or Gus Dur became president. At that time, he was trusted to become the Minister of Defense in 2000-2001. However, he only held the position for three days because Gus Dur was quickly removed from his position as president.

After that, Mahfud ventured into the legislative branch by becoming a member of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly (DPR RI) for the 2004-2009 period through the National Awakening Party (PKB). In 2008, Mahfud was elected as the Chairman of the Constitutional Court (MK). Not only once, he held that position for two terms. In the 2014 Presidential Election, Mahfud MD joined the candidate pair Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa. However, he had the opportunity to join the cabinet when Jokowi was re-elected in the 2019 Presidential Election.
