Megalodon is a famous prehistoric creature, known as a ferocious animal, often depicted in movies and books. However, scientists have actually discovered that this famous animal may be slimmer than previously estimated.
Giant sharks, which are related to the great white sharks in the modern era, lived approximately 15 to 3.6 million years ago. Previous research mentioned that their length reached 50 to 65 feet, with many artists depicting these large creatures as giant versions of the great white sharks.
However, a new study published in the journal Palaeontologia Electronica found that its body was actually longer. Researchers made this discovery by studying a collection of megalodon vertebral fossils and differences in estimated body length. The research team consisted of 26 shark experts from 29 international institutions.
When comparing the fossilized vertebrae of the megalodon with its living relatives up to the present time, they realize "there are differences between the two previously published lengths for the same megalodon specimen," according to Kenshu Shimada, a paleobiology professor at DePaul University.
"If megalodons indeed have longer bodies, it also indicates that they have longer digestive tracts, according to the research report. This may mean that they do not need to eat as often as previously estimated."
Scientists cannot determine with certainty what caused the extinction of this predator 6 million years ago, but it is estimated that climate change played a role. When the water became colder, large animals did not maintain their body temperature due to a lack of prey.
