"Microscopic water bears have the ability to enter a state of 'tun' that is nearly indestructible when experiencing stress, allowing them to survive in the most extreme conditions, even in a vacuum. Scientists have finally discovered the molecular tricks that tardigrades use to enter this nearly invincible state that protects them. Here is the summary!"

Small creatures with eight legs, known as water bears or moss pigs, thrive on Earth. Their success is partly due to their extraordinary resilience. Under harsh conditions, these creatures transform themselves into highly resilient and nearly indestructible dehydrated balls, known as tun.
Metamorphosis, known as anhydrobiosis, allows this creature to survive in extreme temperatures, withstand strong radiation known as cosmic rays, and even survive unharmed after being shot from a weapon.

However, in a new study published on January 17 in the journal PLOS One, researchers revealed the molecular basis of this remarkable survival skill. First discovered in 1773 by German zoologist Johann August Ephraim Goeze, tardigrades were named "tardigrada" or "slow stepper" due to their methodical and unsteady walking style. Around 1,300 species of these microscopic creatures that live in water have been identified, and they have been around for 600 million years - meaning they have survived five major extinction events on our planet.
The extraordinary survival skills of water bears lie in their ability to transform into a highly dehydrated hibernation state. The legs of these creatures retract backwards, and their plump and segmented bodies curl into small balls that release 95% of their moisture.
"By measuring the chemical environment inside tardigrade cells, scientists have discovered that these creatures produce free radicals that transform them into a tun state."
The researchers exposed a group of model species tardigrades (Hypsibius exemplaris) to a number of life-threatening conditions, including levels of hydrogen peroxide, sugar, salt, and dangerously low temperatures of minus 112 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 80 degrees Celsius).
However, in tardigrades, scientists have found that free radicals react with the amino acid cysteine to transform the creature into almost indestructible. They confirmed this by inhibiting the cysteine oxidation process, which prevents tardigrades from entering a tun state.
