According to scientists, life on Earth began about 3.7 billion years ago. Meanwhile, animals from the first period appeared over a long period of time. However, the exact timing is still a subject of debate among experts. Nonetheless, it does not negate the fact that the earliest sponge fossils date back to around 540 million years ago, during the Cambrian period. "This will be the first time sponge fossils have been found from before the Cambrian, and not just before, but way before. That is the most exciting part," said Cardenas from Uppsala University.
